Ask your vet...There aren’t words to express how devastated I was by the loss of my best friend, Sadie. When the veterinarian told me it was all over, my legs buckled beneath me, and I had to be assisted to a chair. At the time, he wanted to talk and asked me if I had any questions about disposing her remains, but I was speechless. It took me a while to pull myself together.

Sadie had been my best friend and closest confidante since I graduated from college and moved into my first apartment. Sadie was a beautiful Akita, with the sweetest and most gentle temperament. Over the twelve years we spent together, we came closer even than sisters, despite being from two different species.

When a family member dies, making arrangements can be quite difficult. You’re hurting; you’re sad. Planning is not really at the top list of your priorities. You need time to cry and time to mourn. The same applies when a beloved pet dies. That pet is part of your family.

Most vets recommend that you make preparations for pet cremation in advance. This can include a “living well” of sorts for your pet. Sometimes, you’re too close to the situation to make clear decisions. When the time comes, the vet and staff can help guide you through the process.
